Why Is Interoperability So Important?

Why Is Interoperability So Important?

AI is taking over the world.

New technologies are constantly emerging.

And if you want to keep pace with your competitors and continue providing excellent services to your customers, you need to be willing to harness the powers of these technologies.

That said, power alone isn't sufficient to make your organization run more smoothly. If you want to harness the full potential of the tools and platforms you acquire, and maintain the integrity of your data in the process, you need to consider interoperability.

But what exactly is interoperability and why is it so important?

The Basics of Interoperability

Broadly speaking, interoperability is an ability of computer systems and software to readily exchange information – and use that information in appropriate contexts. These days, interoperability may also relate to social, political, and organizational factors that can influence inter-system performance.

In other words, interoperability is a measure of how well your systems work together. If you have 50 independent platforms that don't share information quickly or accurately, those systems are practically worthless to you. On the other hand, if you have 10 independent platforms that work together seamlessly and in a way that boosts each system's potential, you'll be in a much better position.

It's possible to think of interoperability as syntactic interoperability or cross-domain interoperability. Syntactic interoperability refers to internal systems within a single organization, while cross-domain interoperability refers to systems across different organizations. No matter what, you'll need to highlight syntactic interoperability, and if you plan on collaborating with other businesses and organizations, you'll also need to consider cross-domain interoperability.

The New Era of Technology

We’re squarely in the age of AI at this point.

Our technology has evolved to the point where it exists in an entirely new stratosphere of capability. We have systems that can fully replicate human conversations and speech, systems that operate in a genetic capacity to function as digital assistants, and systems that can collect and analyze data in ways that were previously thought to be impossible.

This new era of technology has opened the door to tremendous, previously unthinkable potential. But it also demands careful consideration with respect to implementation and integration.

Why Interoperability Is So Important for Your Organization

Why is interoperability so important for your organization in this era of AI?

·       Interacting tech products. Because there are so many different types of AI and tech products, and because technology is important for so many different departments and domains, it's no longer enough to have products that work independently. Your organization is going to rely on tech products working together for the sake of efficiency, performance, and stability. No single AI tool is powerful or comprehensive in capabilities enough to run your entire organization, so instead, you'll need to stitch together an interconnected network of different systems.

·       Increasing scale of technology. The problem is complicated by the fact that technology is increasing in scale. One of the biggest advantages of generative AI, agentic AI, and similar technologies is that they can scale up rapidly; they can serve millions of users just as easily as they can serve a handful. But with this scale comes risk. If you want to appropriately handle this number of users and interactions, and still have your tools work together, you need a sound foundation of interoperability.

·       Data integrity preservation. Data is at the heart of many of these operations, and it's one of the most important considerations for modern businesses. Unless your data is reliable, accurate, and consistent, you won't be able to glean the insights you need to make your organization successful. One of the most important aspects of interoperability is that it preserves data integrity, so you can conduct more reliable analyses.

·       Information transparency. Interoperability also moves you in the direction of information transparency. When your systems work together more closely and more reliably, you'll have a better understanding of the context of those interactions.

·       Collaboration potential. When it comes to cross-domain interoperability, better interoperability leads to higher collaboration potential. Your systems can work together well with the systems of other organizations, you can share data more easily and rapidly – and accomplish more.

·       Competitive dynamics. You can also think of interoperability as an inherent competitive advantage. Your competitors have access to all the same technologies and products that you do, but if they lag behind in terms of interoperability, you'll be able to dominate them.

How to Plan for Interoperability

So how exactly should you plan for interoperability in your organization?

·       Assess your current tech limitations. First, it's a good idea to assess your current technologies, gaps in your tech stack, and flaws in your current approach to interoperability. The better you understand your current weaknesses, the better you'll be able to correct them.

·       Analyze new acquisitions carefully. When considering new technologies and products to add to your organization, analyze them carefully in terms of interoperability. How easily can they work with the other technologies you have in your organization? How easily will they be able to work with other products in the future?

·       Work with skilled developers. With respect to creating new tools or modifying tools to which you already have access, it's important for you to work with skilled developers who understand the importance of interoperability. If your developers have mastered interoperability, in terms of planning, execution, and management, you'll have far fewer logistical problems to contend with.

·       Be on the lookout for gaps and hiccups. Regular audits are essential if you want to maintain interoperability. Tech products are constantly evolving, and it's likely that your organization will continue acquiring and building new products in the future. The more thoroughly you review your existing systems, the better you can keep them in check.

Interoperability is a vital and complex topic, and not one that you should have to sort out on your own. That's why our tech experts have made it their mission to design, create, and manage AI technologies at scale that make interoperability seamless.
